HAND PAINTED PHOTOGRAPHS
Acrylic paints
My father was a photographer in the 1950’s and I grew up using a camera. My mother colorized my father’s B&W photos using Marshall Oils. During this time period the technique was the only practical way to add color to a photograph. Observing my mother colorize the photographs and assisting her in this process is how I learned to paint. I often start my paintings by looking at my photographs. I look at the details within the photograph for something that might have escaped my attention.
Looking through the lens of a camera can help train an artist to focus and capture what might have otherwise been missed.
“I prefer to paint directly on my photographs, instead of using a post-processing software like photoshop. This feels more authentic to me.”
